Crest Pro-Health promised "refreshing sensitivity relief. Clinically proven healthier gums." I'll be the judge of that.
When Crest Pro-Health came out with "Gum and Sensitivity" toothpaste, I brushed it off. My routine already works for me, why change it? Then I was asked to give it a shot for the Shopper Army, and I agreed.
Here are my thoughts:
To start with, I've been using products for sensitive teeth for many years, as I was not blessed with "perfect" teeth. Over the years, aging, cracks, receding gums, have only added to the sensitivity, forcing me to choose between pain every time I opened my mouth, or finding a daily regimen that helped. I found one, and this is the one I'm still using over 10 years later.
For this mission, I maintained my entire dental care routine, except for the toothpaste I currently use. I used the Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste for one week, twice a day, the exact same way the instructions said. Because of my long use of my current routine, my teeth have already been protected, and that protection maintained, against sensitivity, so for this week of use, I remained alert for any LESSENING of my current status. There was absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in sensitivity of my teeth. As I am quite sure my teeth haven't repaired themselves, my fillings haven't magically disappeared, the minute cracks haven't sealed over and my gums haven't grown back to their normal position, I feel safe in saying the sensitivity part of this toothpaste is very accurate. It works.
As for the "gum" part, well my dentist told me my gums were already very healthy, I'm just getting old-er. I also agree with my dentist in that regular daily flossing and brushing takes care of your gums very nicely. It's not the toothpaste you use; it's the brushing. And if you already have problems with gingivitis or other issues regarding your gums, then you should be seeing your dentist about this, and not rely on toothpaste.
I love the taste of Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste! It reminds me of the regular Crest I grew up on. That delicious minty-bubblegum-like flavour.
Offers the excellent protection of fluoride. A definite plus as far as I'm concerned.
I did not like all the foaming this product does. The instructions say "Apply full brush head of paste." This seems to be too much. I was raised to use "a small, pea sized amount", and this is exactly what I've been doing all these years, even with the specialty toothpastes I've used.
Brushing twice each day with specialty toothpaste is plenty for myself, who's majority of teeth are sensitive due to receding gums. (And we're talking about the front upper and lower teeth too folks! If you have sensitive teeth in the front at the gumline, then you KNOW what I'm talking about!)
The instructions on the Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste included "First brush each sensitive area for 30 seconds, and finish brushing the rest of the mouth for at least 1 minute." For someone like myself, that totaled approximately 6 minutes of brushing, not including flossing, picking, 2 rinses, .... too much time. So, I used the Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste for the rest of the week just like I would any other, and it maintained my level of comfort. There was no need for the special instructions; it worked fine.
I do not like the price. I'm currently paying much less per ml for my specialty toothpaste than the Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste sells for at a local store, which sells both. And considering the size is only 90ml, AND if you use the "full head of paste" that is recommended, you're going to be spending too much on this product, when you don't have to, in my opinion.
To wrap up this long winded review:
pros: taste, fluoride, sensitivity protection, cleans well
cons: foaming, cost, size, amount recommended, method of use recommended
undecided: promises re: gums
Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity does a good job for sensitive teeth, but considering the price and size, you can find other toothpastes for the same effects at a much better price.
(To be entirely fair, I would have to use Crest Pro-Health Gum and Sensitivity toothpaste for the same amount of time I've used my current routine, but as I've stated, there was no lessening of the current level of comfort I have, so yes, for sensitive teeth, it will work.)
NOTE: As you can see from my pics, my little blue army man sent, came without a head. Yup. He was decapitated. My pictures do not have "flair", but with a headless man, who needs "flair"!
